I will say that I follow the instinct completely, that in an anniversary year celebrating the longevity of the character, you might want to have the character present.
It’s not 75 years of Steve though, Tom. It’s 75 years of Captain America, and your answer only reinforces that you don’t view Sam as THE Captain America
Well, I’ll tell you how I feel about it. Steve Rogers is the character who has been synonymous with Captain America from the time I was first introduced to him. That’s something like 30 years, which is still dwarfed by the overall longevity of the character.
Sam is Captain America now, but Steve has been the point of view anchor for most of Captain America’s existence. When celebrating that history, Steve should most certainly be the focus. He has been the torch bearer who took Captain America to this point.
Sam is a terrific hero who has earned the mantle. He deserves to be part of the celebration, but he is not the man who made the legend. He is not responsible for Captain America’s longevity. That was based on the strength of Steve Rogers as a character. I don’t know how you properly honor Captain America without making Steve the focus.
Couching it with “how should a person of color feel when they read that quote” just comes off as sad and pathetic. Is that our state of being now?
To be fair though, Jim Gordon was Batman for most of his 75th year.

I KNOW comics revert and regress. I love Steve, but i also love Sam. Sam is being benched again to make room for Steve’s return. It is weak story telling to cash in on corporate synergy.
